The 20 best One Direction songs
20. 'One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)' (2013)
Why cover one pop-punk archetype when you tin cover two at the aforementioned time? This Blondie/Undertones brew-upward medley works meliorate than you lot might wait and raised a lot of coin for Comic Relief when it topped the charts in February 2013. Debbie Harry branded the mash-up 'entirely appropriate', giving the remainder of united states of america permission to enjoy it without likewise much guilt.
Naughty or prissy? A trivial bit naughty. The stalkerish lyrics to 'One Manner or Some other' sound kind of creepy sung past a bunch of highly desirable immature men.
19. 'I Should Have Kissed You' (2011)
This underrated bonus rail from the boys' debut album 'Up All Nighttime' is nigh something we tin all relate to: teenage regret. 'I can't believe that I let you walk abroad, when I should have kissed y'all,' they sing on the bouncy, Busted-esque chorus. It's pretty irresistible stuff, even before Liam and Zayn deliver the quietly heartbreaking line: 'All my friends say that I'grand punching over my weight.'
Naughty or dainty? Nice. They're singing nigh not fifty-fifty making information technology to outset base.
xviii. 'Stone Me' (2012)
Ane Direction become nostalgic on this Queen-referencing track from 2d album 'Take Me Habitation'. 'Practise you think summer '09? Wanna go back there every night' Harry sings at the showtime, right after they've swiped the clapping hook from 'Nosotros Will Rock You lot'. Shameless? Sure, but you'll forgive them because 'Stone Me' is plastic pop-rock perfection.
Naughty or dainty? That depends on whether y'all take the line 'I want you to stone, rock me, rock me, yeah!' literally. (Patently yous don't, though.)
17. 'Gotta Be You' (2011)
Though 'Gotta Be Yous' charted at number three in the UK in November 2011, it'south since been slightly forgotten, fifty-fifty getting the elbow from 1D's recent tour gear up lists. That'due south a shame: information technology remains a devastatingly effective midtempo pop ballad that shows the boys take greater vocal range than they're oft given credit for.
Naughty or nice? Nice – until you lot clock the line 'daughter what a mess I made upon your innocence'. Really, boys?
xvi. 'Happily' (2013)
One Direction come over all Mumford & Sons on this track from 4th anthology 'Midnight Memories'. Expect – come dorsum! The boys really comport off the stadium-folk stomp of 'Happily' remarkably well, partly because the producers don't overdo the banjos, but mainly because the chorus is big plenty to blast the roof off a barn.
Naughty or Nice? Not quite every bit nice as it seems. 'And if he feels my traces in your pilus,' they sing on the 2d poetry, 'I'm sorry Lord, but I don't really intendance.' Eww.
15. 'Girl Almighty' (2014)
Hidden in the eye of 1D's 4th anthology (handily titled '4') is this '50s rock and scroll homage. Imagine McFly covering a Buddy Holly song and y'all're not far off. With lyrics defending a girl whose 'express joy is as loud as every bit many ambulances as it takes to save the saviour' – yeah, that's an actual line – 'Daughter Almighty' is wonderfully airheaded stuff.
Naughty or prissy? Nice, though her express joy does sound pretty awful.
14. 'Stockholm Syndrome' (2014)
This 'Four' album track is actually rather lyrically audacious. Westlife or Have That never compared an intense relationship to the psychological phenomenon where hostages sympathise with their captors. It's also pretty out-at that place musically, ditching 1D'south usual power popular bounciness for a slick soft stone chug that suggests someone in the group really enjoyed the Haim album.
Naughty or nice? Nice, as long as you don't over-think the lyrics.
xiii. 'One Affair' (2011)
The boys serenade a girl who has that indescribable 'one affair' on this infectious early single. There's a whiff of boybands past here – but we don't hateful the olfactory property of sweaty dressing rooms at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party. It's more that it's simply melodically reminiscent of the Backstreet Boys' 'I Desire It That Way'. Rip-off or homage? The chorus is then good that we'll give them the do good of the doubt.
Naughty or nice? Nice. Unless the 'one thing' they're singing near is a complete lack of sexual restraint.
12. 'Diana' (2013)
'The front pages are your pictures, they brand you look so small'. So goes the opening line of this 'Midnight Memories' album runway. Are they singing about that Diana? Probably not, simply this snappy tune has verses that recall The Constabulary and a chorus that evokes Don Henley's 'The Boys of Summertime', a combination we reckon that Di would have liked.
Naughty or dainty? Nice, and definitely preferable to Elton John's 'Candle in the Air current 1997'.
eleven. 'Yous & I' (2013)
Though it stalled at Number 19 in the UK and 68 in the US, this boring-burning single from 'Midnight Memories' is actually one of One Management'due south best ballads. Information technology sees the boys border into soft stone territory, every bit gently strummed acoustic guitars are joined by tasteful strings and a misty-eyed guitar solo that dads of teenage girls tin nod their heads to. Clever.
Naughty or nice? So nice that information technology wouldn't be off-white to write anything snarky hither.
ten. 'Fiddling Things' (2012)
It's non difficult to tell this sweet acoustic ballad was co-written past Ed Sheeran. 'You can't go to bed without a cup of tea,' Zayn sings on the second verse, 'and perchance that's the reason that you talk in your sleep.' 'Lilliputian Things' is lovely besides every bit clunky, though, with the boys reassuring their other halves that they like them for their imperfections, not in spite of them.
Naughty or nice? Basically nice – though TBH, no one wants reminding that 'you still have to clasp into your jeans'.
9. 'Where Practice Broken Hearts Go' (2014)
Non a cover of the classic Whitney Houston ballad, but a massive power-pop banger with a chorus designed to get every mobile phone in the arena held aloft. Harry Styles has a co-writing credit, so information technology's fun trying to gauge which of his former flames might have inspired regret-filled lyrics and confessional couplets like: 'All the remainder of my crimes don't come up close/To the await on your face when I let you go'.
Naughty or nice? Nice. Existent men know when to admit they were wrong.
8. 'Live While We're Young' (2012)
This atomic number 82 single from the band'due south second anthology is an infectious retread of the lead single from their first, 'What Makes You Cute'. Thankfully, 'Live While We're Young' is just unlike enough to work as a classic 1D banger in its own right, despite the similarities in its guitar riff to The Clash'south 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?'.
Naughty or nice? Naughty. When the boys chugalug out the chorus – 'This evening permit's go some and live while we're young' – they're not singing about popping into town for a fro-yo.
seven. 'Night Changes' (2014)
Released in November 2014, 'Night Changes' has now gained the distinction of being the last 1 Management single to feature Zayn Malik. Information technology'southward a swish swan vocal, with the boys delivering sensitive coming-of-age lyrics over some wistfully pretty pop melodies. They co-wrote it as well, don't you know?
Naughty or nice? Nice, but kind of bloodshot if you're nonetheless suffering from any lingering #zaynpain.
half dozen. 'Midnight Memories' (2013)
One Direction channeled Def Leppard and Joan Jett (yes, really!) on the swaggering championship rails from their third album. 'Midnight Memories' is right up there with their most addictive tunes, partly because it has more hooks than the shop where Harry gets his trilbys, and partly because of the genius couplet: 'Tell me that I'm incorrect just I do what I please/Style also many people in the Addison Lee'. Now we're in the post-Uber era, that sounds even more than corrupt.
Naughty or nice? Naughty. Don't the boys know Addison Lee can ban them?
5. 'Story of My Life' (2013)
Offset with strummed acoustic guitars before swelling into a Mumford-style stomp, this 'Midnight Memories' single showcases 1D at their most grown-up and cogitating. Gene in some affecting lyrics about a relationship on the rocks – 'baby, running after you is like chasing the clouds,' Zayn sings on the bridge – and 'Story of My Life' becomes irresistible. It's the band'due south best ballad to engagement.
Naughty or nice? Nice. Just don't listen to it if you're still getting over a break-up.
iv. 'Kiss You lot' (2012)
This power-pop come-on is and so persuasive, it'due south difficult to believe anyone could say no to a One Management band member afterwards listening to it. In fact, 'Osculation You' is then irresistibly light-headed, we fifty-fifty forgive them for the horrendously unsexy 'Three Little Pigs'-referencing lyric 'make them drool down their chinny-mentum-chins'.
Naughty or squeamish? 'If you don't wanna take information technology slow/And you only wanna take me home/Babe, say yeah,' they sing on the chorus. And so, um, not so squeamish.
3. 'Steal My Girl' (2014)
On the pb single from 'Four', the boys sing almost a relationship that'south become so comfy that 'Her mom calls me "love", her dad calls me "son''.' Only there's a problem! 'Everybody wanna steal my girl, everybody wanna steal her heart abroad,' they trill on the chorus. Plain y'all feel for them, just this spruced-up stadium rock tune is so catchy that you lot'll be grin like a fool as you empathise.
Naughty or nice? Nice, but boys: try not to go likewise possessive.
2. 'What Makes You Cute' (2011)
Ane Management's debut unmarried spent iv weeks at number one in 2011 and remains ane of their defining songs. Commencement with a guitar riff which recalls 'Summer Nights' from 'Grease', it's an unstoppable power popular blast praising a girl who's kind of a throwback in the selfie era. 'You lot don't know you're beautiful,' the boys sing on the awesome chorus, 'that'southward what makes you beautiful'.
Naughty or nice? 'Don't need make-up to cover up/Beingness the way that you are is enough,' Liam sings on the first verse – and then pretty nice, so.
1. 'Best Song E'er' (2013)
Though information technology didn't quite top the charts, peaking at Number Ii in both the U.s. and UK, 'Best Song E'er' is 1D's about anthemic and infectious moment. It'southward a runway that captures everything that'due south slap-up virtually beingness a teenager on a nighttime out: dancing, flirting and trying it on – fifty-fifty if, like the boys hither, you end upwards getting told 'never in your wildest dreams'. Of course, information technology'due south non really the best vocal e'er. But it's probably is the best song ever to feature the word 'dentist'.
Naughty or nice? The sort of naughty we'd let any teenager get abroad with.
